Figurative

My abstract figurative works are expressions of human emotion through poses, play, and intimacy. My focus is on storytelling through body language to gain a deeper understanding of the meanings of gestures and form. I often begin with a loose sketch using charcoal, conte’ or paint, from life drawings, experience, exploration, and formal art history. I use fluid lines, bold brushwork, unique colour combinations and shapes to convey energy, spirit and mood. The figures remain purposely ambiguous. I would want the viewer to appreciate and connect their own views, feelings and storylines to them.

Narrative Collection – Story Telling through Art

These works begin as gesture paintings, the same way I work in my expressive figurative series, but I take these much further. I explore and play with lines, forms and shapes that intuitively develop and then move them into symbolic objects and ideas. My intent is to merge the discovery where paths of pleasure and knowledge intersect. Figures and their stories emerge organically when the painting process and imagination work in unity. I work in layers, building up messages and meaning using colours, thick paint, glowing glazes and mark making in mixed mediums. I enjoy hinting at my interpretation of the work in their titles. I also enjoy hearing the viewers interpretations.
